Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a minimally invasive fertility treatment that involves placing specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus to increase the chances of fertilization. This procedure is commonly recommended for couples experiencing mild infertility issues, unexplained infertility, or difficulty conceiving due to specific medical conditions.

IUI is a simple, less expensive alternative to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and is often used in combination with ovulation-stimulating medications to improve success rates.

Description of the IUI Procedure

The IUI process is designed to bypass the cervix and place sperm closer to the fallopian tubes, where fertilization occurs. The procedure involves the following steps:

1. Ovulation Monitoring:

   • The doctor tracks the woman’s ovulation cycle using ultrasound and hormone tests.
   • Fertility medications may be prescribed to stimulate egg production.

2. Sperm Collection and Preparation:

   • A sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a sperm donor.
   • The sperm is washed and concentrated, removing weak or slow-moving sperm.

3. Sperm Insertion:

   • A thin catheter is used to place the prepared sperm directly into the uterus.
   • The procedure is quick and painless, typically taking just a few minutes.

4. Post-Insemination Monitoring:

   • The patient rests for a short period before resuming normal activities.
   • A pregnancy test is conducted two weeks later to check for success.

Common Causes of Infertility That IUI Can Address

• Mild male factor infertility: Low sperm count, poor motility, or abnormal sperm shape.

• Ovulation disorders: Including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
• Mild endometriosis: A condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus.

Diagnosis and Evaluation Before IUI

Before undergoing IUI, both partners will undergo fertility evaluations, including:

• Ovulation tracking to confirm egg release.
• Hormone tests and ultrasound scans to assess ovarian function.
• Semen analysis to determine sperm quality.
• Fallopian tube testing (HSG test) to ensure tubes are open for fertilization.

  • The patient lies on the exam table as a catheter is inserted into the uterus.
  • The sperm sample is slowly injected through the catheter.
  • The process is quick (5-10 minutes) and does not require anesthesia.

  3. Post-Treatment Care

  • Patients can return to normal activities immediately.
  • A pregnancy test is taken after two weeks to confirm success.
