Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a fertility preservation procedure that allows women to store healthy eggs for future use. The process involves several carefully monitored steps to maximize the chances of preserving high-quality eggs.
1. Fertility Assessment
The process begins with a comprehensive fertility evaluation. Your fertility specialist will assess your ovarian reserve through blood tests that measure hormone levels, such as Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), along with a transvaginal ultrasound to evaluate the ovaries and determine whether egg freezing is the right option for you.
2. Ovarian Stimulation
Once the evaluation is complete, hormonal medications are prescribed to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs instead of the single egg normally released during a natural menstrual cycle. Throughout this stage, the development of the follicles is closely monitored using ultrasound scans and blood hormone tests to determine the optimal time for egg retrieval.
3. Egg Retrieval
When the eggs have reached maturity, they are collected during a minimally invasive procedure performed under light sedation or short general anesthesia. Using ultrasound guidance, the fertility specialist inserts a fine needle through the vaginal wall into the ovaries to retrieve the mature eggs. The procedure typically takes 15–30 minutes, and most patients return home the same day.
4. Egg Evaluation
After retrieval, the eggs are examined by an experienced embryologist, who identifies the mature eggs suitable for freezing. Only healthy, mature eggs are selected to maximize the likelihood of successful fertilization in the future.
5. Egg Freezing (Vitrification)
The selected eggs are frozen using vitrification, an advanced ultra-rapid freezing technique that prevents the formation of ice crystals, which could damage the eggs. Vitrification has significantly improved egg survival rates after thawing and is now considered the international standard for egg cryopreservation.
6. Long-Term Storage
The frozen eggs are stored in specialized cryogenic tanks filled with liquid nitrogen at -196°C (-321°F). Under these conditions, the eggs remain in a suspended state and can be safely preserved for many years while maintaining their viability, subject to local regulations and clinical guidelines.
7. Using Frozen Eggs in the Future
When pregnancy is desired, the frozen eggs are carefully thawed and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory, most commonly using Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The resulting embryos are cultured and assessed, and the highest-quality embryo(s) are transferred into the uterus to achieve pregnancy.
