The embryo transfer process takes place several days after the eggs have been fertilized with sperm in the laboratory and the embryos have developed to a suitable stage, often the blastocyst stage (day 5 or 6). Prior to transfer, an embryologist evaluates the quality of the embryos and selects the best one(s) for transfer. The chosen embryo(s) are carefully loaded into a thin, flexible catheter. The physician gently inserts the catheter through the cervix and into the uterine cavity, often guided by ultrasound to ensure optimal placement of the embryo(s). The embryo(s) are then gently released from the catheter into the uterus. The procedure usually takes only a few minutes and does not require anesthesia in most cases. After the transfer, the woman is typically advised to rest for a short period, but can usually resume light daily activities. Hormonal support (such as progesterone) is often provided to help prepare the uterine lining and support embryo implantation. A pregnancy test is performed approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer to determine if the procedure was successful. Embryo transfer is a critical step in the IVF journey towards achieving pregnancy.
