The Refractive Lens Exchange process begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the eye and the patient's medical history to determine the suitability of the procedure and select the most appropriate type of artificial lens. The surgery is typically performed on one eye at a time on different days. The eye is anesthetized using topical drops, and the patient may be given a sedative to help them relax. The surgeon makes a very small incision in the cornea or sclera to access the natural lens. Using ultrasound technology (phacoemulsification) or sometimes a femtosecond laser, the natural lens is softened and broken into small pieces and then removed through suction. Once the natural lens is completely removed, the folded artificial lens (IOL) is inserted through the same small incision and carefully positioned within the capsule that previously held the natural lens. The IOL unfolds into place. In most cases, the small incision is self-sealing and does not require stitches. The procedure typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes per eye. After the surgery, a protective shield may be placed over the eye, and the patient is prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation and promote healing.
