LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK eye surgery begins with a comprehensive eye evaluation to determine if the patient is a suitable candidate for the procedure. This evaluation includes detailed examinations of the cornea, visual acuity, refractive power, and overall eye health. Before the surgery, the eye is numbed with topical anesthetic eye drops. The surgeon then uses a precise instrument called a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser to create a thin flap in the outer layer of the cornea. This flap is gently lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue. Next, an excimer laser, a highly precise ultraviolet laser, is used to reshape the cornea according to pre-determined measurements to correct the refractive error. The laser removes microscopic amounts of corneal tissue to change its curvature, allowing light to focus properly on the retina for clear vision. After the cornea is reshaped, the corneal flap is repositioned without the need for stitches, where it heals naturally. The surgery typically takes about 20-30 minutes for both eyes. Following the procedure, the patient is given eye drops to aid healing and prevent infection. The recovery period is usually short, and most patients experience significant improvement in their vision within a day or two.

Diagnosis: Comprehensive eye exam: Includes a series of tests to evaluate the patient's vision and overall eye health. This involves measuring visual acuity using an eye chart, measuring refractive power to determine the degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, and assessing the shape and thickness of the cornea using corneal topography and pachymetry. Pupil dilation exam: Eye drops are used to dilate the pupils, allowing the doctor to examine the back of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve, to ensure there are no other health issues that may affect the surgery. Medical history evaluation: The doctor will ask about the patient's medical history, any medications they are taking, or any medical conditions that may affect the healing process. Pre-operative consultation: A detailed discussion with the surgeon about the procedure, potential risks, expected benefits, and answering any questions the patient may have.

Treatment Stages: Preparation for surgery: The patient may be asked to stop wearing contact lenses for a specific period before the surgery. The eyes are thoroughly cleaned before the procedure. Anesthesia: The eyes are numbed using topical anesthetic eye drops to numb the surface of the eye.
