Pediatric orthotics involve the design and use of external devices that support or correct musculoskeletal deformities or instabilities. These devices include ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs), spinal braces, orthopedic shoes, and night-time splints. Each device is carefully tailored to the child’s needs, considering their anatomy, growth stage, and medical condition. Orthotics are often used in combination with physical therapy or other rehabilitative services to maximize function and comfort.
A common condition in young children, often benign, but if associated with pain or poor posture, orthotic shoe inserts or arch supports may be prescribed to improve gait and alignment.
In mild to moderate cases, spinal braces are used to prevent further curvature progression. These braces are custom-fitted and worn for several hours a day.
These angular deformities may require night splints or corrective orthoses to guide proper leg alignment during growth.
Children with cerebral palsy often benefit from ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) that improve stability and muscle tone, and help support independent walking.
In cases where one leg is shorter than the other, heel lifts or orthotic soles can balance limb length and correct gait asymmetry.
