• Involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine, bile duct, and gallbladder.
• The digestive system is reconstructed to maintain food processing and nutrient absorption.
• The procedure takes 5 to 8 hours and requires a long recovery period.

2. Total Pancreatectomy

• Involves the complete removal of the entire pancreas, spleen, and parts of the digestive system.
• Used when the cancer affects the entire pancreas or when multiple tumors are present.
• Patients will require lifelong insulin therapy and pancreatic enzyme supplements.

3. Distal Pancreatectomy

• Removes the tail and body of the pancreas, often including the spleen.
• Typically used for tumors located in the distal (left) portion of the pancreas.
• Less common than the Whipple procedure but considered safer.

4. Palliative Surgery

• Performed in cases where cancer cannot be fully removed but aims to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.
• Includes procedures to bypass bile duct blockages or alleviate digestive obstructions.

Post-Surgical Treatment Options

Following surgery, additional treatments are often required to prevent recurrence and destroy remaining cancer cells:

• Chemotherapy – Standard drugs such as gemcitabine or fluorouracil (5-FU) are used to kill cancer cells.
• Radiation Therapy – Uses high-energy rays to shrink tumors and eliminate microscopic cancer cells.
• Targeted Therapy – Drugs like PARP inhibitors or KRAS inhibitors target specific genetic mutations.
• Immunotherapy – Helps the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells in some patients.
