What is Hormone Therapy?

It is primarily used for:

1. Hormone-driven cancers: Such as breast and prostate cancer.
2. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT): For menopause-related symptoms.
3. Endocrine disorders: Such as thyroid dysfunction and adrenal disorders.

Reasons for Using Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy is recommended for:

• Hormone-dependent cancers: Such as breast, prostate, and endometrial cancer.
• Hormonal imbalances: Such as thyroid disorders and menopause.
• Conditions requiring hormone suppression or supplementation: Like post-menopausal estrogen replacement or testosterone suppression in prostate cancer.

Symptoms Indicating Hormone Therapy

• Hormone-sensitive cancers: When tumors grow due to estrogen or testosterone.
• Menopausal symptoms: Including hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.
• Hypothyroidism: Symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and depression.
• Adrenal gland disorders: Including high blood pressure, muscle weakness, and unexplained weight gain.
• Bone weakening: Due to estrogen or testosterone deficiency.

Diagnosis and Treatment

• Hormonal blood tests: To assess levels of estrogen, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and cortisol.
• Tissue biopsy: To determine if a tumor is hormone-dependent.
• Imaging tests: To monitor disease progression.

Types of Hormone Therapy

1. Hormone production inhibitors (e.g., Leuprolide for prostate cancer).
2. Hormone receptor blockers (e.g., Tamoxifen for breast cancer).
