Total Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure aimed at relieving pain and improving the function of a severely damaged hip joint due to arthritis, injury, or other conditions. The procedure involves replacing the damaged joint surfaces of the hip with artificial parts (prosthesis) made of biocompatible materials such as metals and high-quality plastics. This intervention aims to restore natural hip movement, significantly reduce pain, and enable patients to resume their daily activities and improve their quality of life. Total hip replacement is an effective solution for many individuals suffering from chronic hip pain that limits their mobility and activity.

Quick Summary

Total Hip Replacement is offered by 31 vetted providers across 9 destinations in the Macrocare network. Treatment prices start from $4,000, covering the treatment itself — flights and accommodation are not included.

The total hip replacement process begins with a comprehensive patient evaluation that includes a physical examination and assessment of the medical and health history, as well as imaging tests such as X-rays to determine the extent of hip joint damage. The surgery is carefully planned to determine the appropriate size and type of prosthesis for the patient. During the surgery, which is performed under general or regional anesthesia, the surgeon makes a surgical incision to access the hip joint. The damaged parts of the femur (femoral head) and acetabulum (hip socket in the pelvis) are then removed. Next, the artificial components are implanted: a metal stem is inserted into the upper femur, and a metal or ceramic ball is attached to the top of the stem to replace the femoral head. The surface of the acetabulum is also prepared, and a plastic or metal liner is inserted to receive the artificial ball, forming a new, smooth-moving joint. These components are fixed either with bone cement or using a "press-fit" method where natural bone grows to secure the prosthesis over time. After ensuring the stability of the prosthesis and the new hip movement, the surgical incision is closed. The postoperative period includes pain management, intensive physical therapy to restore muscle strength and joint movement, and instructions on the necessary precautions to protect the new hip during recovery. The rehabilitation program aims to enable the patient to walk and move independently and gradually resume their daily activities.
