Macular Hole Repair

Macular hole repair is a surgical procedure used to treat a macular hole, a small break in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. This condition can cause blurred or distorted central vision and, if left untreated, may lead to permanent vision loss.

The most effective treatment for a macular hole is vitrectomy surgery, in which the eye surgeon removes the gel-like vitreous humor inside the eye and replaces it with a gas bubble to help the macula heal properly.

• Dilating eye drops and imaging tests to prepare for surgery.
• Local or general anesthesia to ensure a painless procedure.

2. Vitrectomy Procedure (Macular Hole Repair)

• The surgeon makes tiny incisions in the eye to remove the vitreous gel.
• A gas bubble is inserted into the eye to push the edges of the macular hole together.
• The eye naturally heals as the gas bubble gradually dissolves.
• In some cases, a retinal membrane peel is performed to improve healing.

3. Post-Surgery Recovery

• Patients must maintain a face-down position for several days to weeks to allow the gas bubble to press against the macula.
• The gas bubble dissolves over 4-8 weeks, and vision gradually improves.

• Strict face-down positioning for the recommended period to aid healing.
• Avoid air travel until the gas bubble is fully absorbed.
