Biopsy Analysis

The biopsy analysis process begins after the treating physician takes a sample of the suspicious tissue or cells using various methods depending on the location of the sample (such as needle biopsy, excisional biopsy, or endoscopic biopsy). The sample is immediately sent to the pathology laboratory for preservation and preparation for microscopic examination. In the lab, a pathologist or a specialized lab technician performs the initial processing of the sample, which may include fixing it in a special solution (like formalin) to preserve its cellular structure and prevent decomposition. After that, the sample goes through several stages including: processing (removing water and replacing it with a substance like paraffin), sectioning (cutting the paraffin-embedded tissue into very thin slices using a microtome), and staining (applying different dyes to the slices to highlight different cell and tissue components and make them visible under the microscope). The pathologist examines the stained slides under a microscope to evaluate the shape, size, and arrangement of cells, and identify any abnormal changes or diseased cells (such as cancer cells). Additional tests may also be performed on the tissue (such as immunohistochemistry or genetic testing) to obtain further information that helps determine the type of disease and its characteristics.

Biopsy analysis is a diagnostic procedure requested based on a medical suspicion of a condition that requires detailed tissue examination to confirm the diagnosis or determine the nature of the problem. Biopsy analysis itself does not cause symptoms (except for what may result from taking the sample itself), but it is performed to determine the cause of presenting symptoms or to evaluate abnormal findings from other examinations. Symptoms or clinical signs that may lead a physician to suspect a disease requiring biopsy analysis include:

• Presence of abnormal lumps or masses: Can be palpable under the skin or detected by imaging tests (such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI).

Underlying causes of these symptoms or suspected conditions that often require biopsy analysis for definitive diagnosis include:

• Cancer: Biopsy analysis is the gold standard for diagnosing most types of cancer, as it can identify the presence, type, grade, and sometimes stage of cancer cells.
• Benign tumors: To confirm that a tumor is not cancerous and determine its type.
• Chronic or acute inflammation: Identifying the cause and severity of inflammation (such as hepatitis, nephritis, or inflammatory bowel disease).
• Infection: Identifying the type of causative organism in some cases.
• Autoimmune diseases: Tissue examination may show characteristic changes of autoimmune diseases affecting specific organs.
• Identifying the source of a metastatic tumor: If a tumor is found in a location different from the suspected primary site.
• Evaluating the extent of tissue damage in certain conditions: Such as chronic kidney disease or liver disease.

Diagnosis" using biopsy analysis is performed by a pathologist who examines the tissue sample under a microscope and uses necessary staining techniques and additional tests to determine the nature of the cells and tissue. The pathologist's report is the final diagnostic report that confirms or rules out the presence of a specific disease, especially cancer. The report includes a detailed description of what was observed under the microscope and the final diagnosis.

"Treatment" is not the biopsy analysis procedure itself, but rather the treatment plan that is developed based on the accurate diagnosis provided by the biopsy analysis results. Biopsy results are crucial in determining the most appropriate course of treatment and assessing the severity of the disease. Stages after taking and analyzing the sample include:

• Taking the sample: The treating physician takes the tissue sample.
• Processing the sample in the laboratory: The sample is prepared for microscopic examination by lab technicians and the pathologist.
• Microscopic examination and report generation: The pathologist examines the stained slides and writes the diagnostic report.
• Discussing results with the treating physician: The treating physician receives the pathology report and discusses its findings with the patient.
• Developing a treatment plan: Based on the final diagnosis from the biopsy analysis (e.g., type, stage, and grade of cancer), the treating physician recommends the most effective treatment plan, which may include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, or a combination of these treatments.
• Monitoring treatment response: In some cases, follow-up biopsies may be taken to monitor the tumor's response to treatment or detect any new changes.
• Determining follow-up schedule: Based on the nature of the disease and its diagnosis, a schedule for future regular medical checkups is determined.
