Lutetium Therapy

Lutetium-based therapy is a form of targeted cancer treatment that combines a radioactive substance with a molecule designed to recognize specific targets on cancer cells.

One of the most established applications is Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) therapy, particularly for certain neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) that express somatostatin receptors. The treatment allows radiation to be delivered more selectively to targeted tumor cells while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

Lutetium Therapy may be considered based on the type and stage of cancer, receptor expression, previous treatments, and the patient's overall medical condition.

It may be considered for selected patients with:

• Certain neuroendocrine tumors

Diagnosis

Before Lutetium Therapy, the medical team performs a comprehensive assessment to determine whether the patient is an appropriate candidate. This may include:

• Complete blood count

• Kidney and liver function tests

• CT or MRI scans

• Somatostatin receptor imaging, such as Ga-68 or Cu-64 PET/CT, when appropriate

• Assessment of tumor receptor expression and disease extent

Treatment

Lutetium Therapy is administered intravenously in a specialized nuclear medicine facility. The radioactive compound travels through the bloodstream and binds to specific receptors or molecular targets on the cancer cells.

Depending on the specific treatment protocol, therapy may be given in multiple sessions separated by several weeks.

During treatment, the medical team monitors the patient's condition and may provide supportive medications and measures to reduce radiation exposure to healthy organs.

Possible side effects may include:
