Endovascular coiling is an advanced treatment for cerebral aneurysms that does not require open brain surgery. During the procedure, a neurointerventional specialist guides a thin catheter through an artery, usually from the groin or wrist, toward the blood vessels of the brain.

Tiny platinum coils are then placed inside the brain aneurysm. These coils promote clot formation and help isolate the aneurysm from the normal circulation.

Depending on the aneurysm's size, location, shape, and neck width, treatment may also involve stent-assisted coiling, balloon-assisted coiling, or flow diversion.

A brain aneurysm is a weakened area in the wall of a cerebral artery that forms a bulge filled with blood. Some brain aneurysms remain small and cause no symptoms, while others may grow and increase the risk of rupture.
