Clinical Toxicology

Clinical Toxicology is the medical specialty concerned with evaluating, diagnosing, and treating illnesses and emergencies caused by exposure to toxic substances. These may include prescription and over-the-counter medications, drug overdoses, household and industrial chemicals, pesticides, toxic gases, alcohol and recreational substances, heavy metals, contaminated substances, and venom from snakes, scorpions, or other animals.

Clinical toxicologists assess the substance involved, the amount and route of exposure, the time since exposure, and its effects on vital organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. Depending on the case, evaluation may include laboratory testing, toxicology screening, blood gas analysis, ECG monitoring, imaging, and continuous observation of vital signs.

Treatment is tailored to the specific toxin and the patient's clinical condition. Management may include supportive medical care, specific antidotes when available, gastrointestinal decontamination in selected cases, intravenous fluids, respiratory or cardiovascular support, correction of metabolic abnormalities, and enhanced elimination techniques such as hemodialysis when medically indicated.

Severe poisoning can lead to altered consciousness, seizures, respiratory failure, cardiac arrhythmias, shock, liver or kidney injury, and multi-organ failure. Patients with significant toxicity may therefore require emergency treatment, continuous monitoring, or admission to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Clinical Toxicology also addresses chronic or repeated toxic exposure, including occupational and environmental exposure and heavy metal toxicity. Early specialist assessment can help identify the source of toxicity, determine the appropriate investigations, initiate targeted treatment, and reduce the risk of serious complications.
