Lymphedema Treatment (Lymphatic Drainage Therapy)

Lymphedema can affect the arms, legs, or other areas of the body and may develop due to problems with the lymphatic system, cancer treatment, surgery, infection, trauma, or other underlying conditions.

Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT) is a specialized, gentle manual therapy performed by a trained therapist to encourage the movement of lymph fluid toward functioning lymphatic pathways. It is commonly used as part of a broader Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) program, which may also include compression therapy, exercise, skin care, and patient education.

Common Symptoms

• Persistent swelling in the arm, leg, hand, or foot

• A feeling of heaviness or tightness in the affected area

• Reduced range of motion

• Skin tightness or thickening

• Difficulty wearing clothes, shoes, or jewelry

• Aching or discomfort

• Recurrent skin infections in some cases

Common Causes

• Lymph node removal or damage

• Cancer treatment, particularly surgery or radiation therapy

• Congenital or developmental abnormalities of the lymphatic system

• Trauma or surgery

• Certain infections

• Conditions that impair lymphatic drainage

Diagnosis
Diagnosis is primarily based on the patient's medical history and physical examination. The specialist may assess the location and severity of swelling and evaluate the condition of the skin and tissues. Additional tests may be recommended when needed, including:

• Doppler ultrasound

• Lymphoscintigraphy

• MRI or CT imaging

• Bioimpedance measurements in selected cases

Treatment
Lymphedema treatment is individualized according to the cause and severity of swelling. Treatment options may include:

• Manual lymphatic drainage therapy

• Compression garments or bandaging

• Therapeutic exercises

• Skin care and infection prevention

• Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

• Pneumatic compression therapy in selected cases

• Surgical or microsurgical lymphatic procedures for carefully selected patients

The goal of treatment is to control swelling, improve function, reduce complications, and help patients maintain long-term lymphatic health.
